To drive legally in the UK you need to pass both your theory and practical tests. The first step is to apply for your provisional licence which you can do by post or in certain cases online. The licence usually takes two to three weeks to arrive. When you’ve got your provisional licence, you are then able to start driving as long as you are accompanied by a full licence holder who is over 21 and has had a full UK licence for at least three years. In practice most people find it best to get a professional driving instructor or driving school to teach them. Learning from an amateur may mean that you just learn mistakes.
You can also start studying for your theory test which you have to pass before you can make your application for a practical driving test. Statistics show that most people require around 45 hours of professional tuition with a driving instructor + some extra practice if they have the opportunity.
The driving test takes about 35-40 minutes and requires a good standard of driving. Faults are recorded by the examiner as driving faults, serious errors and dangerous errors. You are not allowed to make any serious or dangerous errors and are allowed up to 15 driving faults. |
